The green hydrogen sector is experiencing a resurgence after encountering challenges last year. A significant portion of this revitalization can be attributed to the aviation industry, which is actively seeking sustainable alternatives to its reliance on conventional jet fuels derived from petroleum. Numerous bio-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) formulations have emerged but have struggled to reach substantial scalability, leading many to place their bets on green hydrogen and e-fuels as potential game-changers.
### Understanding Green Hydrogen and E-Fuels
E-fuels, often referred to as electrofuels, represent an innovative approach toward developing SAF. These synthetic hydrocarbon fuels are engineered by merging captured carbon with green hydrogen—typically generated through water electrolysis using renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power. Biomass is also being explored as a viable resource; however, current efforts primarily focus on harnessing water through electrolysis.
In the United States, there has been a notable surge in e-fuel initiatives particularly evident in Texas. American Airlines has entered into an ambitious partnership named Project Roadrunner alongside Infinium and other stakeholders focused on producing e-fuel SAFs.
