Apple’s Mac computers, which incorporate Apple silicon chips, have been engineered to power on automatically when the lid is opened or when they connect to a power source. However, if this feature does not suit your preferences, there’s a solution available in macOS Sequoia.
According to Apple’s recent support document, there are clear steps you can follow to stop an Apple silicon Mac from inadvertently waking up upon opening the lid or connecting it to a charger. Implementing these changes will require using the Terminal app.
Steps for Modifying your Mac’s Startup Behavior
- Ensure that your Apple silicon laptop runs macOS Sequoia or a later version.
- Launch the Terminal application located within the Utilities folder inside Applications.
- In Terminal, enter one of these commands followed by pressing Return:
- To disable startup on opening the lid and while connected to power:
sudo nvram BootPreference=%00
- To stop it from starting only upon opening the lid:
sudo nvram BootPreference=%01
- If you want it not to start solely while charging:
sudo nvram BootPreference=%02
- To disable startup on opening the lid and while connected to power:
- You will be prompted for your administrator password (be aware that Terminal won’t display any characters as you type), then hit Return.
If at any time you wish to revert these changes and restore default behavior for powering on your MacBook, open Terminal once again and simply input sudo nvram -d BootPreference
