ComEd’s Commitment to Electric Vehicle Expansion
Serving over four million customers and encompassing about 70% of Illinois’s population, ComEd is a prominent utility company. Recently, the utility has launched a new initiative aimed at promoting sustainability through electric vehicle (EV) adoption. At the recent Chicago Auto Show, it was announced that ComEd would allocate $100 million in rebates for residential and commercial entities to foster increased consumer interest in EVs.

$53 million is designated specifically for business sector purchases of electric vehicle fleets; even small businesses seeking a single vehicle qualify.
$38 million focuses on necessary upgrades facilitating the installation of Level II (L2) and Level III (DC fast charging) stations aimed at non-residential clients.
An allocation near $9 million targets homeowners interested in installing Level II home chargers; rebates can reach up to $3,750.
This strategic funding follows last year’s similar incentives totaling $90 million under Illinois’ ambitious Climate & Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), which targets one million EVs by 2030 across state roads.

Notably important is that more than half of these funds directly support low-income customers and equity-designated communities with enhanced rebate offers available for them. As Brian Urbaszewski from Respiratory Health Association noted: “Encouraging cleaner transport among vulnerable populations is crucial given their heightened risk from air pollution-related health issues.”

Electric school buses are receiving attention within this funding strategy since they dramatically improve air quality—critical during formative years—and contribute positively to cognitive development as well as lung health among children inhabiting high-pollution areas.
