On February 14, Tideway, the company spearheading the Thames Tideway Tunnel project—often referred to as London’s “super sewer”—celebrated a crucial milestone in its ambitious undertaking.
Completion of Sewer Connections
After nearly a decade of hard work and innovation, Tideway successfully finalized the last of its 21 crucial connections linking the historic Victorian sewer system to a state-of-the-art tunnel stretching over 25 kilometers. This newly implemented infrastructure aims to significantly reduce sewage pollution entering the tidal Thames.

This newly minted super sewer integrates with another substantial structure called Lee Tunnel—a critical component managed by Thames Water—creating what is known as the ‘London Tideway Tunnel’ system (LTT). Spanning from Acton Storm Tanks in West London across various neighborhoods like Hammersmith and Southwark towards Abbey Mills Pumping Station in East London where it concludes at Beckton Sewage Treatment Works via Lee Tunnel transfer.
Initiation efforts commenced back in autumn of 2024 when preliminary connections led to an astounding capture rate during unprecedented rainfalls amounting up to 589 tons of stormwater within just 24 hours through LTT facilities alone!
