In December alone, BYD witnessed a staggering 60% increase in plugin vehicle sales compared to the prior year. When examining the full year of 2024, sales rose by an impressive 41.3%. This equates to an additional 173,766 units sold in December versus December 2023 and a remarkable total increase of 1,241,968 vehicles across all twelve months.
The Role of Plugin Hybrids
A significant contributor to BYD’s growth was its plugin hybrid segment, which experienced a phenomenal surge—doubling sales with a notable increase of 102% in December alone compared to the previous year. Over the course of 2024 as a whole, these vehicles grew by an astonishing total of 73%, representing an uptick of approximately 152,282 units from last year’s figures just for December.

In regard to fully electric vehicles (EVs), BYD also performed well: their monthly sales in December improved by around 9%, with annual growth hitting approximately 12%. This translates into an additional increase of about 16,980 units sold month-over-month and adds up to roughly another190,170 EVs on American roads over the course of this past year.
