Tesla’s Sales Struggles: A Concern for Clean Tech Coverage
Concern has been expressed by one of our loyal readers regarding our focus on Tesla’s recent substantial price reductions and the evident trends linking these cuts to a fall in sales. They feel we are shifting away from our core mission of covering clean technology, or as they phrased it, “clean teck.” In response, I shared my wish that I could report on all the new Tesla factories that are set to produce 4 to 5 million vehicles annually; however, with slow progress towards this goal in recent times and failure to reach previously set targets for growth—specifically a 50% increase per year—it’s become challenging.
The Current Sales Landscape
Tesla recorded 499,550 vehicle sales back in 2020. If they had achieved their goal of growing by half each year through 2025, their annual sales numbers would be nearing an impressive figure of almost 9 million vehicles. However, just last year (2024), Tesla’s sales total was recorded at 1,789,226—a slight decrease from the previous year’s total of 1,808,581 units sold.
Declining Production Potential
A few years ago, Elon Musk articulated aspirations for numerous additional gigafactories worldwide. At one point in time there were plans for a factory in Mexico and potential establishments across Asia and Europe as well—perhaps India or the Netherlands were considered locations too. In statements made back in 2022, Musk suggested that ultimately there could be around ten to twelve gigafactories globally capable of producing electric vehicles (EVs). Currently operational gigafactories include one located in Texas (USA), another operative site in China is also functional along with another production facility situated near Berlin (Germany). Furthermore—and though slightly different—it’s important to also note their unique Nevada-based plant.
Hurdles Ahead for Gigafactory Plans
