A New Vision on a Hike in Alaska
This thought struck Christopher Smith, a professional with extensive experience in renewable energy, while he was enjoying a hike in Alaska. Observing a freight train pass by sparked an idea—these trains could be crucial in transferring renewable energy from remote locations to areas where it is urgently needed.
Ambitious Pilot Project in Colorado
A few years later, Smith has teamed up with Jeff Anderson—a pioneer in green technology—to launch what they believe will be an unprecedented pilot initiative based out of Colorado. Their goal is to demonstrate how freight trains can alleviate transmission limitations by transporting large batteries to utility sites like existing fossil fuel facilities. There, stored power can then be distributed more widely through the electrical network.
The initiative is being spearheaded by their company SunTrain, located in San Francisco. They are collaborating with Xcel Energy—the dominant utility provider in Colorado—and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) located in Golden to apply for a federal grant worth $10 million aimed at advancing this innovative technology. If successful and approved by state regulators, they anticipate launching this pilot program within two years and potentially operating their first train within four years.
Tackling Transmission Constraints
According to both Anderson and Smith, insufficient capacity on the existing grid presents substantial barriers for integrating renewable energy sources and phasing out reliance on fossil fuels.
Numerous reports signal an urgent need for enhancing America’s transmission capabilities; notably, one recent document released by the U.S. Department of Energy anticipates that our current systems must double their capacity before 2050.
“The majority of green energy developments rely heavily on access to transmission channels,” noted Smith. “Many prime opportunities have been utilized over recent decades.” Some projects he previously engaged with became untenable due solely to limited grid access challenges.
A Train Network Ready For Change
The United States boasts roughly 140,000 miles of railway infrastructure—much of which traverses remote landscapes where wind farms and expansive solar installations operate efficiently,” remarked Smith.
Additionally, rail systems offer significant advantages over trucking solutions due to their ability to support heavy loads; each lithium-ion phosphate battery utilized by SunTrain weighs around 120 tons! With plans indicating that battery-laden trains would encompass between 80-100 cars each journey.
Smith further highlighted safety features stating that these batteries use less than 6% lithium compared with nearly 60% found within conventional counterparts highlighting such units’ lower environmental risk during accidents or spills: “In case of derailment it’s unlikely we’ll witness severe consequences like explosions or fires.”
