Revolutionary Cross-Linker Additive Enhances Organic Solar Cell Durability

The new additive, which constitutes a mere 0.05% of the formulation, has resulted in a remarkable lifespan enhancement of over 59% for OPVs. Challenges Facing Organic Photovoltaics
Organic photovoltaics stand out as promising contenders within next-generation solar technology due to their straightforward manufacturing processes and flexibility, enabling them to be produced as lightweight films. Nevertheless, their inherent organic composition often results in stability issues over prolonged periods, especially when subjected to high temperatures.
A Novel Approach with Superior Efficiency
Prior attempts had investigated using cross-linkers for enhancing durability; however, many strategies required high quantities that ultimately compromised battery performance. In contrast, this research introduced a six-bridged azide cross-linker known as 6Bx—a highly effective photo-crosslinking agent demonstrating outstanding stabilizing properties even at minimal concentrations. Comprising six units capable of azide bonding results in an exceptional theoretical efficiency rate reaching up to 96%.
Performance Comparison with Conventional Cross-Linkers
This level of efficiency significantly exceeds traditional cross-linking agents; for instance, four azide units only achieve approximately 82% efficiency (referred to as 4Bx), while two units fall short at around just 36% efficiency (designated as 2Bx).
Dramatic Results from New Cross-Linking Technique
The experimental OPVs built utilizing this new additive showcased stellar performance levels peaking at an efficiency rating of 11.70%, maintaining about 93.4% after exposure to elevated temperatures for an extended duration—1,680 hours—or around two months—in conditions set at precisely 85°C. In stark contrast: OPVs made without any such cross-linking saw their efficacy diminish substantially down to just about 8.17%, indicating that these devices retained only 58.% effectiveness compared to their initial value recorded at 13 .92%. This marks more than a fifty-nine percent improvement concerning operational longevity under thermal stress.
Molecular Dynamics Insights
