Peopoly has launched the Magneto X 3D desktop FDM printer which replaces a conventional belt and pulley system with its proprietary magnetic linear motor system, delivering high precision and print speeds, and making it the first desktop printer to feature this technology. The Magneto X is launched at an introductory price of US$1399, and a US$1999 retail price.

The desktop 3D printer market is currently at a stage where almost every product launch is seeing more advanced technology becoming more accessible to non-industrial users. Peopoly’s newly launched Magneto X fused filament fabrication (FFF) printer is the latest in this trend, being the first of its kind to eschew traditional belt-pulley XY motion systems in favor of its proprietary MagXY magnetic linear motor – essentially the same technology as found in maglev trains and rail guns.

This new system results in an astounding 3 microns of precision which, Peopoly claims, results in fewer print artifacts. The low rail friction also extends lifespan and reduces calibration needs, while making extruder replacement simpler, with no belts to disconnect or obstruct access. Another benefit is high printing speed of up to 800 mm/s, travel speed up to 1500 mm/s and acceleration of 22,000 mm/s2.

Ordinary belt drive systems tend to suffer from vibrations and require calibration of belt tension and to compensate for resonance, something that Bambu Lab has been handled quite well with its latest A1 mini. Peopoly avoids these issues by taking an altogether novel approach.

The Magneto X uses a lancer extruder with 60 mm3/s peak flow rate with 3 cooling fans to support the high flow rate. Four independently driven Z-axes along with 48-point auto-leveling across the build surface ensure further accuracy and deliver a layer height of 0.1 mm. Other features include filament runout detection, a fast heating build plate, a built-in 1080P 30FPS monitoring camera and 7” color touchscreen interface, making this a high-end product in its category. The Magneto X’s build volume is 400 x 300 x 300 mm.
