In a heartfelt open letter, Migicovsky expressed his yearning for a smartwatch that encapsulates fundamental features. He voiced his frustrations after testing virtually every smartwatch on the market; none seemed to encompass all the capabilities he envisions:
- An always-on e-paper display that is reflective rather than emitting light—perfectly readable in sunlight and intentionally designed to be unobtrusive;
- Extended battery life—eliminating charging hassles and simplifying travel without lugging extra cables;
- A clean and aesthetically pleasing user interface focused on essential functionalities like timekeeping, notifications management, music control, alarms setup, weather updates, calendar access as well as sleep and activity tracking;
- Physical buttons enabling users to play or pause music without needing to glance at their watch;
- Customizable options. Unlike current market leaders such as Apple—which limits watch face customization—Pebble has historically boasted over 16,000 unique faces available in its app store.
The Open-Source Leap by Google
Google’s acquisition of Fitbit included rights to Pebble’s intellectual property. In line with recent trends toward transparency and collaboration in technology development, they have chosen to release PebbleOS as open source; developers can now access its code freely online.
