My Journey to Cisco Live: A Transformative Experience
During my undergraduate studies at East Carolina University, I had a serendipitous encounter with Cisco Live.
The Beginning of a New Interest
As a communications major with aspirations in journalism and mass media, I was well aware of the thriving tech landscape in the Raleigh-Durham area and hoped to secure a position at one of those esteemed firms. My search led me to delve into details about Cisco, which quickly introduced me to the vibrant excitement of Cisco Live. The moment I visited their website, I was captivated by the collaboration with diverse partner organizations, colorful visuals featuring attendees from various backgrounds, and the overall allure of this significant event—despite not fully grasping what it entailed. This welcoming digital atmosphere ignited my desire to be part of such an exciting community!
Aiming for Inclusion at Cisco Live
Upon accepting a role as a Technical Consulting Engineer within Customer Experience (CX) at Cisco, thoughts of attending Cisco Live were still vivid in my mind. During my first day on the job when given an opportunity for inquiries, my foremost question emerged: “What criteria are required for attending Cisco Live?” The answer did not satisfy me; instead, it fueled my determination even further.
Pursuing My Dreams Through Mentorship
The pivotal chance arrived when I discovered the Women of Cisco Executive Shadow Program—a platform where emerging professionals could learn from seasoned executives. Fueled by ambition while crafting my application video, I emphasized how critical it was for me to shadow someone deeply involved with organizingCisco Live and attend alongside them. In fact, I made it clear: if this connection couldn’t happen immediately, I’d pause until another round.
A Mentor Like No Other
I had the privilege of being paired with Heather Henderson Thomas—a newly appointed director in event marketing whom I’d affectionately call “the ultimate architect behind all things related toCisco Live!” Having once participated herself as a mentee in this mentorship initiative through WOC Global Executive Shadow Program previously allowed her profound insight into its potential impact on careers like mine. She eagerly embraced her new mentoring responsibilities determinedly aimingto provide me with an unforgettable professional journey.
