Apple to Elevate RCS Messaging with Cross-Platform Encryption

This announcement coincides with the GSM Association’s introduction of an updated standard for RCS.
Improved Privacy Measures for Android and iPhone Users
In mid-November 2023, Apple initially revealed plans to introduce RCS functionalities aimed at refining text communications for its users. The feature was officially launched alongside iOS 18 in September 2024. Although RCS offers a variety of advantages and significantly improves text interactions between Android and iPhone users, one notable shortcoming has been its lack of end-to-end encryption (E2EE), posing significant privacy risks as messages can be intercepted by unauthorized entities.
Recently, the GSM Association released a new specification that includes robust encryption support, and Apple has confirmed it will adopt this security enhancement in forthcoming updates later this year.
Apple’s Commitment to Enhanced Security
In a statement provided to The Verge, Apple representative Shane Bauer expressed enthusiasm about these developments: “End-to-end encryption is a critical technology for ensuring privacy and security that we have supported from the inception of iMessage. We are thrilled to contribute significantly towards providing end-to-end encryption within the newly established universal profile of RCS formulated by GSMA. Support for encrypted RCS messaging will be added across our platforms – including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS – in inevitable software updates.”
Upcoming Features in the Latest RCS Profile
Although no exact release date was mentioned by Apple officials regarding E2EE integration within messaging services on their devices, it is reasonable to expect that this functionality will roll out with the anticipated launch of iOS 19 later this year.
The GSM Association’s announcement also highlighted additional advancements associated with Universal Profile 3.0 for RCS messaging—such enhancements include better coding techniques for audio messages as well as an enriched deep link format tailored specifically for business communications. These improvements are expected to be integrated into Apple’s Messages application concurrently when E2EE becomes available later this year.
