The prohibition against selling the iPhone 16 in Indonesia is a consequence of Apple’s inability to fulfill certain commitments set by local regulations. To maintain market access, companies must either procure a significant portion—40%—of their components domestically or invest substantially in local development. This was a requirement that Apple had committed to uphold but evidently fell short.

By month’s end, reports emerged claiming approval from President Prabowo Subianto concerning Apple’s plans for constructing factories within Indonesia—a proposal believed to be connected to Roeslani’s earlier comments regarding investment intentions.

Though there has been no public comment from Apple about these negotiations thus far, sources indicate that company representatives engaged with key Indonesian officials on January 7, 2025. Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita—the country’s Industry Minister—confirmed discussions took place with various executives including Nick Ammann of global government affairs.
‘We have not established a specific timeline for reaching an agreement; instead, we are focusing on achieving substantive outcomes,’ Agus conveyed during interviews.
