Transitioning to Google Messages: Samsung’s Shift from Samsung Messages
The collaboration between Samsung and Google has ushered in a new era of messaging with the introduction of Galaxy AI, effectively sidelining Bixby. Recent updates indicate that another service from Samsung is gradually receding into the background—Samsung Messages is notably absent as a pre-installed application on the Galaxy S25.
Samsung’s Strategic Decision
In an official communication, Samsung clarified its stance on this transition by announcing that it will be moving away from its SMS platform and will systematically shiftusers towards Google Messages. The complete statement reads:
“Due to our strategic partnership with Google, we have decided to phase out Samsung Messages in favor of integrating all functionalities into Google Messages. While it may no longer be accessible via the Play Store, existing users can continue using it at their discretion. We believe that adopting RCS messaging within Google Messages significantly enhances user experiences when messaging both across Android devices and other platforms.”
Status of Existing Users
For those who currently have Samsung Messages installed on their devices—including models before the Galaxy S25—it remains functional. However, future access to this app through the Play Store has been terminated. Users who wish to switch applications can seamlessly opt for Google Messages or explore various SMS alternatives available through their device settings under Default Apps.
The Evolution of Default Messaging Apps
Google’s messaging service has been integrated as the primary SMS application since last August in earlier models like the Galaxy S21 series—this trend continued with new foldables such as Z Fold6 and Z Flip6.
A Positive Shift in User Choices?
This move towards consolidating messaging services marks a reduction of redundancy for consumers; while some users might lament losing familiarity with an old app, there remains a wealth of alternative SMS applications readily available on both the Play Store and Samsung Galaxy Store.
