$25 Million Initiative for Energy Technology on Tribal Lands
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced plans to introduce a funding opportunity worth $25 million aimed at enhancing energy technology deployment on Tribal lands this upcoming spring.
Funding Overview and Application Details
The DOE’s Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs recently released a notice indicating that a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) will be available soon, with awards expected to vary between $100,000 and $2.5 million, or from $250,000 up to $5 million based on specific projects. Interested parties will have approximately 90 days post-notification to submit their applications.
Supporting Indigenous Community Energy Initiatives
“Our Office is thrilled about continuing the DOE’s dedicated investment in enhancing energy infrastructure and electricity access within American Indian and Alaska Native communities,” stated Wahleah Johns, Director of the Office of Indian Energy. “This funding initiative plays a crucial role in fostering energy independence among Tribal communities nationwide.”
Eligible Projects under the NOFO
This upcoming NOFO invites proposals from eligible candidates including Indian Tribes, Alaska Native Regional Corporations, Village Corporations, Intertribal Organizations, as well as Tribal Energy Development Organizations for projects such as:
- The installation of energy generation systems or enhancements to improve efficiency within Tribal buildings.
- The setup of community-scale energy solutions or storage facilities on Tribal territories.
- The establishment of self-sustaining integrated energy systems capable of operating independently from conventional power grids during emergencies or ensuring community resilience.
- Providing power solutions for off-grid Tribal structures.
A Track Record in Supporting Tribe-Based Projects
In collaboration with Native tribes across the nation, the Office aims to reinforce its ongoing initiatives focused on accelerating the development and implementation of essential energy infrastructure through this NOFO program. Since 2010 until 2024, they have allocated over $190 million towards upwards of 240 diverse tribal projects encompassing an overall value exceeding $300 million across all contiguous states plus Alaska.
