Surge in European Electric Vehicle Registrations
In January, the European market for passenger plug-in vehicles reported a total of 244,000 new registrations, reflecting an impressive 18% increase compared to the previous year. The rise is driven predominantly by battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which saw 168,000 units sold, marking a 37% year-on-year growth. Conversely, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) faced a decline with sales dropping by approximately 5%, totaling around 76,000 units. This trend resulted in BEVs taking a significant lead over PHEVs at 69% versus 31%, starkly improved from last year’s distribution of 61% BEVs and 39% PHEVs.
Despite an overall dip in the car market—down by about 3%, totaling just over one million units—BEV market share remains strong at approximately 17%. This figure shows considerable progress compared to only 12% last January and notably higher than the modest 10% recorded in January of the previous year.
Traditional Fuel Trends Declining
The landscape for other vehicle types reflects ongoing shifts as well: conventional hybrids have climbed steadily from a 26% share last January to 29%, and now reaching 35%.
