The Displace TV is touted as the world’s first smart screen that works without cables of any kind, and also without a conventional wall-mount of any kind. Now, its OEM has gone into more detail on the “vacuum suction system” that keeps it up instead, and what happens if it or the integrity of the wall behind it were to fail. This involves the “ingenious” safeguards inside the TV rated to let it abseil down gently rather than shatter on the floor.

Displace claims to have taken reservations for all but 19 of the units of its “World’s First Truly Wireless TV” announced as available to ship in December at CES 2023. Therefore, the OEM might have a lot of potential customers wondering exactly how the “vacuum suction system” that keeps it on the wall in place of a traditional physical mount works, and how reliable it is.

The company has now held a follow-up press conference with updates on those points. Displace CEO Balaji Krishnan revealed that each TV will ship with “proprietary active-loop vacuum technology” that draws from internal batteries, rated to keep the device on a wall by itself for between 3 and 10 months.

The Displace TV is also touted to stay safe via its “proprietary self-lowering landing gear system“. It is set off by always-on sensors powered by “advanced wall-sensing algorithms” that activate 4 fast-acting strips of adhesive found on the TV’s proprietary cruciform mount, which then acts as an anchor for a zipline connected to the TV.

That allows the TV to lower itself gently to the ground (somewhat reminiscent of a high-tech drone with a dying battery), where it lands on foam ‘feet’ that also deploy if the wall sensors are tripped. That should happen in response to any damage to the wall behind the TV as well as to the failure of the vacuum system. The whole system, “landing gear” and “suction cups” included, are all stored inside the TV at all times, even though it is only 30 millimeters in depth.

Accordingly, Displace hails its new breakthrough as making its Amazing Spider-TV the “World’s Safest” of its class, although it only works at heights of 10 feet above the ground or less.

The OEM also highlights other potential advantages such as gesture-based controls, a “hot-swappable battery system” and scalability in its upcoming “First Truly Wireless TV“. Then again, the Displace TV is apparently restricted to a 60Hz refresh rate; in addition, its new safeguards might push its shipping date back into early 2024 at the latest.
