Supporting Our Veterans: The Changing Landscape of Assistance
For many years, the Department of Veterans Affairs has aided veterans in navigating the complex challenges of civilian life. However, recent layoffs affecting staff members at the department’s suicide crisis hotline and other vital phone services have raised concerns regarding support for this vulnerable population.
A Shifting Workforce: Layoffs and Their Impact
In a significant workforce reduction, over 2% of the VA’s probationary employees were let go in recent weeks. Stephen Machuga, CEO and co-founder of Stack Up—a charity dedicated to assisting military veterans through gaming—is uncertain about what these changes mean for future programs dedicated to veteran care.
Despite this uncertainty, Machuga is optimistic that society will continue to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by service members throughout history.
Empowering Veterans Through Gaming
Stack Up plays an essential role in helping veterans cope with combat-related injuries, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder by harnessing the power of gaming. Its noteworthy initiative, the Stack Up Overwatch Program, offers essential 24/7 mental health counseling aimed at active-duty service members as well as veterans facing personal struggles.
This November marks Stack Up’s tenth anniversary. In anticipation of this milestone, Machuga is keen on raising awareness about their mission: “We want people to know we’re still here making a difference,” he states. His recent attendance at industry events like Dice Summit aims to bolster support for both Stack Up and all veterans seeking assistance.
The Financial Reality
“It’s disheartening,” Machuga expresses about tightening budgets within both his organization and across much of the gaming sector. “During COVID-19 we saw an influx in donations which has since dried up; we’ve had to shut down our warehouse for supplying care packages.” He maintains that while they are adjusting spending habits prudently given budget constraints, they yearn for greater financial freedom.
The challenge becomes more daunting when considering how perceptions toward veteran support have changed over time. “With each passing year since 9/11,” he notes sadly, “there seems to be dwindling enthusiasm from civilians towards supporting troops.” He advocates tirelessly for recognition amidst shifting societal focus on war-related issues.
Evolving Support Mechanisms
The scope of assistance provided by Stack Up has transformed significantly over time. Previously focused on sending gaming consoles overseas during active combat operations—efforts which are now less prominent—the organization now prioritizes reinforcing ties among home-based soldiers grappling with reintegration post-deployment by facilitating attendance at geek culture gatherings or excursions such as trips to Disneyland.
