December 14: A Milestone in Apple’s Journey
The Professional Edge of All-in-One Desktops
Apple introduced the iMac Pro during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June of that same year; however, it didn’t officially release until mid-December. This formidable all-in-one solution came at a time when no new professional-grade desktops had emerged since the controversial “trash can” Mac Pro from back in 2013. It functioned as an intermediary for users seeking serious computing power.
The inaugural model was engineered with options for eight-core, ten-core, fourteen-core, or eighteen-core Xeon processors complemented by Radeon Vega graphics capabilities. Users could customize their machines to include up to a whopping 256GB RAM and a substantial SSD of up to four terabytes. The device eclipsed all predecessor iMacs regarding performance—its eighteen-core Intel processor delivered speeds more than double that of its most recent consumer-oriented variant.
The integrated design also showcased a vibrant display with a resolution boasting over five thousand pixels across—5K to be precise—and featured a striking space gray finish that extended to the accompanying keyboard and mouse.
