The country tests a multitude of viable options domestically, and the rigors of competition naturally elevate the most effective solutions while discarding less competent ones. This concept becomes particularly clear when comparing battery-electric buses to hydrogen fuel cell buses, as illustrated by developments in Beijing, the capital city.
Beijing’s Climate and Urban Landscape
Situated 150 kilometers inland from the coast, Beijing experiences extreme temperatures; currently, it is -11° Celsius (12° Fahrenheit), a common winter scenario with past lows recorded at −27.4° C (−17.3° F). Summers bring hot and humid conditions averaging around 31° C (88° F) with humidity levels reaching 70%. The climate can draw parallels with cities such as Chicago or Washington D.C., creating similar challenges in urban sustainability.
Population and Public Transit Infrastructure
This massive metropolis houses approximately 22.6 million inhabitants across its sprawling 12,796 square kilometers (4,940 square miles), surpassing even New York City and Los Angeles in both size and population density.
In contrast to many Western cities that expanded alongside increasing car ownership, China’s urban centers like Beijing prioritize public transit systems extensively. As of December 2024, the Beijing Subway boasts an impressive network comprising 29 lines and covering a total length of about 879 kilometers through its extensive grid of stations—523 in total—that facilitate roughly 10.5 million passenger trips daily.
The subway system’s Line 10 alone accommodates around 1.34 million riders each day—consolidating its place among top global transit frameworks still under expansion.
The Expansive Bus Network
As per data collected by October of the same year, there were approximately 2,257 bus routes operating within Beijing’s thoroughfare—a testament to their commitment toward accessible transport solutions worldwide—with around 20 thousand buses completing nearly 147 thousand trips every day while ferrying over 6.6 million passengers on board; numbers that demonstrate remarkable reliance on public transport within such an expansive populace.
